Safe lifting comes down to one principle: keep the load close to your body and let your legs do the work. Plan the lift, position your feet, bend your knees slightly rather than stooping, grip firmly, keep the load at waist height and close in, move smoothly, and never twist while carrying weight.
But technique is the last line of defence, not the first. UK law requires employers to avoid hazardous manual handling altogether where reasonably practicable — so if the answer to a heavy load is “lift it properly”, the earlier questions have been skipped.

What the law actually requires
The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 set a three-step duty in Regulation 4, and the order matters:
- Avoid hazardous manual handling operations so far as is reasonably practicable
- Assess any hazardous operation that cannot be avoided
- Reduce the risk of injury so far as is reasonably practicable
Training in lifting technique sits inside step 3. It does not discharge steps 1 and 2. An employer whose only control is “we trained them how to lift” has not met the duty.
“Manual handling operations” is broader than lifting — it covers transporting or supporting a load by hand or bodily force, including lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying and moving. And a “load” includes a person or an animal, which is why the same regulations govern moving and handling in care settings.
Employees have duties too. Regulation 5 requires them to make full and proper use of any system of work provided.
The lift, step by step
1. Plan before you touch it
- Where is it going, and is the route clear?
- Can it be avoided — trolley, sack truck, pallet truck, hoist, or delivery straight to point of use?
- Is it too heavy or awkward for one person?
- Do you need help, or gloves for a sharp edge?
Test the weight by tilting a corner first. Never commit to a lift you have not tested.
2. Position your feet
Feet apart for a stable base, one foot slightly forward alongside the load. Keep them free to move so you can shift position without twisting.
3. Adopt a good posture
Bend your knees — but do not drop into a full deep squat, which is unstable and hard to rise from. HSE guidance favours slight bending of the back, hips and knees over either fully flexing the back (stooping) or fully flexing hips and knees.
Keep your back’s natural curve. Chin tucked in, shoulders level and facing the same direction as your hips.
4. Get a firm grip
Hug the load to your body if that gives a better hold than gripping only with the hands. Where possible, slide it towards you before lifting.
5. Keep it close — this is the one that matters most
The further a load is from your spine, the greater the force on your lower back. The same box held at arm’s length imposes several times the load of one held against the waist.
Keep the heaviest side nearest your body. If you cannot get close because something is in the way, move the obstacle first.
6. Lift smoothly
Straighten the legs, lift smoothly, no jerking or snatching. Keep the load at waist height for carrying.
7. Move your feet, don’t twist
Twisting under load is one of the most reliable ways to injure a back. Turn by stepping, not by rotating your spine.
8. Look where you’re going
Head up once the load is secure. If you cannot see over it, it is too big to carry alone.
9. Put down, then adjust
Set the load down first and slide it into final position afterwards. Precision placing while still holding the weight is where a lot of injuries happen.
Three myths worth killing
“Always lift with a straight back and bent knees”
Repeated as gospel, and oversimplified. A full deep squat with a rigid vertical back is unstable, tiring and often impractical. The realistic advice is a slight bend at back, hips and knees — avoiding the two extremes of stooping and deep squatting.
“The legal limit is 25 kg”
There is no legal maximum weight in UK law. 25 kg is a guideline figure for a specific ideal position, and it falls sharply as the load moves away from the body. See manual handling weight limits: the truth.
“A back belt will protect me”
Back belts and supports are not accepted as a control measure under the regulations. There is no good evidence they prevent injury in healthy workers, and they can create false confidence.
Pushing and pulling
Pushing a load is generally preferable to lifting it, and pushing is usually better than pulling — you can see where you are going and use your body weight.
- Push with your hands between waist and shoulder height
- Use your body weight and your legs, not your back and arms
- Keep your feet away from the load so you do not trip or run into it
- Take extra care on slopes and uneven ground; on a downward slope the load can gain momentum
- Well-maintained wheels matter enormously — a seized castor can double the force needed
Team lifting
Two people are not simply twice the capacity. Coordination, differing heights and uneven load-sharing all reduce the benefit.
- Agree one person to lead and give the commands before you start
- Pick people of broadly similar height and build where possible
- Agree the route, the destination and where you will set it down
- Lift, move and lower together on a clear call
- Make sure each person can maintain their grip for the whole route
Assessing the risk
Where hazardous handling cannot be avoided, the assessment considers four things — Task, Individual, Load, Environment, usually remembered as TILE. See the TILE assessment explained.
The most useful question is nearly always the first one in Regulation 4: can this be avoided entirely? Deliveries placed at point of use, smaller pack sizes, height-adjustable benches, trolleys and mechanical aids remove the risk rather than managing it.
What goes wrong
Manual handling injuries are usually cumulative rather than dramatic — the damage builds through repeated poor handling and then presents as a single bad day.
- Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) affecting back, neck, shoulders, arms and legs
- Sprains and strains of muscles, tendons and ligaments
- Slipped and prolapsed discs, and nerve compression
- Hernias
- Crush and impact injuries to hands and feet from dropped loads
- Cuts and burns from the load itself
Report early symptoms rather than working through them. Persistent aching after handling tasks is information, not weakness.
Training
The regulations require employers to provide information and training where manual handling risks remain — including, so far as reasonably practicable, an indication of the weight of each load and of the heaviest side where the centre of gravity is off-centre.
Training should cover recognising harmful handling, correct technique, using the aids provided, and the specific tasks and loads in your workplace. A general course covers the principles; only the employer can cover your loads, your routes and your equipment.
