OVERVIEW

About this course.

This course raises your awareness of the risks of working with Display Screen Equipment (DSE) and the simple, low-cost steps you can take to reduce the risk of injury or ill health. Many people now spend most of their working day in front of a screen — at a desk, on a laptop at the kitchen table, or moving between the office and home. Poor posture, a badly arranged workstation or long periods of unbroken screen work can lead to aches and pains, eye strain, fatigue and stress, and over time can contribute to longer-lasting musculoskeletal problems. The course explains what DSE is, the law and the duties it places on employers and employees, the harmful effects associated with DSE use and why they happen, how a workstation risk assessment is carried out, how to set up your own workstation correctly, and the wellbeing measures that protect you — including eye and eyesight tests, breaks, changes of activity and simple exercises.

A full section covers home and hybrid working, which is now a normal part of many roles and is fully covered by the same Regulations. The guidance throughout is drawn directly from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), in particular the Approved guidance L26 on the DSE Regulations and the brief guide INDG36. The aim is practical: by the end you should be able to look at your own workstation, spot the common problems, fix most of them yourself, and know when and how to ask for help. The course is suitable for everyone who uses DSE at work, whether you are office-based, home-based or hybrid.

COURSE DETAILS

Who it’s for, and the law behind it.

Office and home workers who use screens for an hour or more at a time, and the managers who must arrange DSE assessments for them.

The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 require employers to assess workstations, plan breaks or changes of activity, and provide eye tests for DSE users who request them. This course covers correct workstation setup — screen, chair, keyboard, lighting — and the habits that prevent musculoskeletal problems and eye strain.
