Personal protective equipment (PPE) is the clothing and equipment that protects people from health and safety risks at work — from gloves, eye protection and hard hats to hi-vis, hearing protection and respirators. Crucially, PPE is the last line of defence: it is used to control the risk that remains after other measures have been applied, not as a substitute for them. This course explains what PPE is, why it sits at the bottom of the hierarchy of control, and when it is needed.
It then sets out the law — the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 and the 2022 amendment that extended duties to certain workers — and the responsibilities of employers and workers. It works through the main types of PPE by body area (head, eyes, hearing, respiratory, hands, body and feet), and how to select the right PPE, understand its markings, use it correctly, and maintain, store and replace it. It also makes clear the limits of PPE. It is an awareness-level course suitable for all staff who use or manage PPE.
