OVERVIEW

About this course.

A duty of care is the legal and moral obligation to act in the best interests of the people you support and to do everything reasonable to keep them, and others, safe from harm. It applies the moment you take on a care or support role and sits at the heart of good, safe, professional practice. This course explains what a duty of care actually means, where it comes from in law and in codes of practice, and how it shapes the everyday decisions of anyone working in health, social care or a support setting.

It then works through the harder, real-world side of the duty: the duty of candour (being open and honest when things go wrong), how to balance a person’s rights and choices against their safety, and how to handle the conflicts and dilemmas that arise when those pull in different directions. It covers responding to comments and complaints, and what to do about incidents, errors, near misses and concerns — including safeguarding and whistleblowing, and where to go for advice. It is an awareness-level course that gives every worker the confidence to recognise and uphold their duty of care.
