OVERVIEW
This course provides a thorough awareness of autism so that you understand more about autistic people, your legal and ethical responsibilities, and how to offer respectful, effective support. Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts with others and experiences the world around them. Around 1 in 100 people in the UK are autistic, which means that almost everyone will live, work, study or come into contact with autistic people during their life. The course explains what autism is and the key terms used (including the important debate around identity-first and person-first language), the legislation that protects autistic people, the characteristics and behaviours an autistic person may display, sensory and communication differences, masking, and a wide range of practical strategies you can apply in real settings.
Throughout, it promotes a respectful, strengths-based and individualised approach, and is written with input from the way autistic people themselves describe their experiences. By design, this is a fuller awareness course intended to give you genuine, usable knowledge rather than a brief overview. You will work through detailed explanations, real-world UK examples, worked scenarios and reference tables, and then complete a 20-question assessment to confirm your learning.
