OVERVIEW

About this course.

This comprehensive course examines safer recruitment — the practices used to deter, reject and identify people who are unsuitable to work with children or vulnerable adults, and to make sure everyone recruited into such a role is genuinely suitable for it. Safer recruitment is one of the most important parts of an organisation's safeguarding arrangements: people who present a risk often deliberately seek out roles that give them trusted access to children or vulnerable adults, and a weak recruitment process is one of the easiest ways for them to gain that access. Getting recruitment right is therefore a frontline form of prevention, not an administrative formality. The course works through the whole recruitment journey in the order it actually happens. It begins with what safer recruitment is and why it matters, the legal framework in England (with particular reference to Part 3 of ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ and the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006), and how a genuinely safer culture underpins everything else. It then takes you step by step through advertising, job descriptions and person specifications; application forms and the disciplined scrutiny of gaps and inconsistencies; objective shortlisting; structured interviewing and assessing suitability; references; and the full suite of pre-employment checks — DBS and barred-list checks, the meaning of regulated activity, right to work, identity, qualifications, prohibition and disqualification checks, and overseas checks.

Finally it covers the things that turn a good appointment into a safe one over time: the single central record, conditional offers, induction and probation, and the ongoing vigilance, supervision, low-level concern and allegation processes (including the role of the Local Authority Designated Officer, the LADO) that keep people safe long after the contract is signed. Worked examples, decision tables and red-flag checklists are used throughout so you can apply the principles to real recruitment situations in education and care. This is an awareness and good-practice course. It explains the law and statutory expectations accurately but it is not legal advice, and it does not replace the role-specific safer recruitment training that panel members and decision-makers must complete, nor your own organisation's policies. Where rules differ between settings — for example schools and colleges in England compared with care providers regulated by the Care Quality Commission — the course flags the difference rather than blurring it.
