Half of all mental health problems are established by the age of 14, yet the early signs in children and young people are often missed or misread as ‘just a phase’. A youth mental health first-aider offers early, non-judgemental support and helps guide a young person towards the right help. This course explains why young people’s mental health matters, how it differs from adult mental health, and the pressures — from school and social media to family and identity — that affect it.
It then builds practical understanding: the common issues young people face (anxiety, depression, self-harm, eating problems and more) and how to recognise the warning signs, and how to give mental health first aid through a calm, supportive conversation. It covers getting professional help, the vital overlap with safeguarding, and looking after your own wellbeing in a supporting role. It is an awareness-level introduction to the role for teachers, youth workers, parents and anyone working with young people; it is not an accredited MHFA England certification.
