Sepsis is the body’s life-threatening overreaction to an infection, and it kills around 48,000 people in the UK every year — more than many common cancers. This course explains what sepsis is and why it matters, how an ordinary infection can tip into a medical emergency, and why early recognition saves lives.
It then focuses on recognition and response: the signs and symptoms of sepsis in adults, how it can look different and progress faster in children and higher-risk groups, and how to respond — seeking urgent help, asking ‘could it be sepsis?’, and the role of prevention through good infection control. It is an awareness-level course for care and health workers, parents, carers and anyone who wants the knowledge to recognise sepsis early and act.
