OVERVIEW

About this course.

Feedback is one of the most powerful tools an assessor, trainer, tutor or teacher has. Decades of educational research place high-quality feedback among the single most effective things a practitioner can do to raise a learner’s achievement. Yet feedback is also one of the easiest things to get wrong. Vague comments, feedback that arrives too late to be useful, criticism aimed at the person rather than the work, or a wall of red pen with no clear path forward can leave a learner confused, demoralised and no better able to improve than before. Giving feedback well is a skill, and like any skill it can be learned, practised and refined. This course is designed for anyone who gives feedback on learners’ assessed work: assessors in the workplace and in vocational settings, trainers, tutors, teachers and anyone supporting learners towards a qualification, standard or set of criteria. It explains why feedback matters so much in assessment, what separates effective feedback from ineffective feedback, how to deliver feedback well both in writing and face to face, and how to record feedback and follow good practice around targets, inclusion, data protection and standardisation. Throughout, the focus is on practical, everyday technique — what to say, how to say it, and how to make sure your feedback actually changes what the learner does next. The course is aligned with the principles of the TAQA framework (Training, Assessment and Quality Assurance) and with widely recognised assessment-feedback practice. It is an awareness and continuing professional development (CPD) resource rather than a qualification in its own right. It concludes with a 20-question multiple-choice assessment, which you must pass at 80% to earn your CPD certificate. By the end you should feel more confident and more deliberate about the feedback you give, and clearer about the difference it can make to every learner you work with.

This is an awareness-level CPD course. It develops your understanding and does not confer assessor or quality-assurer status; it is not a TAQA or CAVA unit or any Ofqual-regulated qualification. It concludes with a 20-question multiple-choice assessment, which you must pass at 80% to earn your certificate.
