Pressure ulcers — also called pressure sores or bedsores — are areas of damage to the skin and underlying tissue caused by sustained pressure, often over a bony part of the body. They are painful, can become serious and even life-threatening, and yet the great majority are preventable with good care. This course explains what pressure ulcers are, how and why they develop, and why they matter so much for people's comfort, health and dignity.
It then focuses on prevention in practice: recognising the risk factors and using structured risk assessment, spotting the early signs and understanding the categories of pressure damage, and delivering the everyday care that protects skin — repositioning, skin care, the right equipment, nutrition and hydration. It also covers when and how to escalate concerns. It is an awareness-level course that helps care and health workers play their part in preventing pressure ulcers and recognising damage early.
