When a baby or child is seriously ill or injured, knowing what to do can be the difference between a good outcome and a tragedy — and children are not simply small adults, so first aid for them differs in important ways. This course introduces paediatric first aid, its place within the EYFS requirements for early years settings, and the limits of awareness-level training. It explains the key differences between children, infants and adults and how to carry out a primary survey on a child.
It then covers the emergencies that matter most: CPR, the recovery position and choking in a child or infant; serious bleeding, shock, burns and scalds and febrile seizures; and recognising and responding to anaphylaxis, head injuries and meningitis, including when to call 999. It is an awareness-level course that builds knowledge and confidence for parents, carers and those working with children; it is not a substitute for a regulated, hands-on Paediatric First Aid qualification where a role (such as an EYFS setting) requires one.
