Mental Health First-Aider

About this course.

Just as a physical first-aider gives initial help until professional treatment is available, a mental health first-aider offers early, non-judgemental support to someone developing a mental health problem or in a crisis — and helps guide them towards the right professional help. With workplace mental ill-health affecting millions and costing enormously in wellbeing and lost time, the role is increasingly valued. This course explains what the role is and, just as importantly, its boundaries: a mental health first-aider is not a therapist or counsellor.

It then builds practical understanding: the scale of workplace mental ill-health, the common conditions — such as anxiety, depression and stress — and their warning signs, and how to hold a supportive conversation using a structured, ALGEE-style approach. It covers recognising and responding to a crisis, the relevant legal context, and how to signpost people to UK support. It is an awareness-level introduction to the role that raises confidence to help; it is not an accredited Mental Health First Aid (MHFA England) certification.
