Most people become managers because they were good at their job. Then, overnight, the job changes. Your success now depends on how well other people work. This course gives you the practical foundations of leading a team in the UK: setting direction, delegating, holding good conversations, managing performance fairly and looking after your people.

Line managers sit between an organisation and the people who do the work. The CIPD, the professional body for HR and people development, describes them as leading day-to-day operations while also managing people. Its 2023 evidence review found that capable, well-supported managers have a positive effect on wellbeing, engagement, absence, staff turnover and performance. Yet many people are promoted into management with little or no preparation.
