Hate crime is among the most damaging forms of offending because it attacks people not for what they have done but for who they are. When someone is targeted because of their race, religion, sexual orientation, disability or transgender identity, the harm goes far beyond the individual incident: it tells the victim, and everyone who shares that characteristic, that they do not belong and are not safe. For this reason hate crime is treated with particular seriousness in UK law and policy, and everyone who works with the public has a part to play in recognising it, responding well and helping victims to come forward.
This course explains what hate crime is, using the perception-based definition agreed by the police and the Crown Prosecution Service, and sets out the five centrally monitored strands or protected characteristics. It draws the crucial distinction between a hate crime — a criminal offence — and a hate incident, which is non-crime hostility that is still recorded and still deserves support. It explores the many forms hate crime takes, from verbal abuse and harassment to physical assault, criminal damage and online hate, the serious and lasting impact on individuals and communities, and the major problem of under-reporting. It shows you how to recognise hate crime, respond with care, preserve evidence, and report it through the right channels — including the police, True Vision, third-party reporting centres and internal safeguarding. The course concludes with a 20-question multiple-choice assessment, which you must pass at 80% to earn your CPD certificate.
