OVERVIEW

About this course.

Fire safety is one of the most serious responsibilities in any early years setting. A fire in a nursery, pre-school or childminder’s home is not the same as a fire in an ordinary workplace, because the people most at risk — babies and young children — cannot recognise the danger, cannot make their own way to safety, and depend entirely on adults to get them out. Good fire safety in early years is about planning, drilling and being ready to evacuate a room full of small children, including sleeping babies, calmly and quickly, then accounting for every one of them.

This course explains the law that applies, principally the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 strengthened by the Fire Safety Act 2021, together with the EYFS requirement for an emergency evacuation procedure and appropriate detection and control equipment. It covers the role of the ‘responsible person’, common causes and prevention, fire doors, detection and alarms, escape routes and assembly points, evacuation cots for babies, PEEPs for children with additional needs, grab bags, registers, ratios, drills, designated roles and exactly what to do on discovering a fire.
