OVERVIEW

About this course.

Female genital mutilation, usually shortened to FGM, is a serious form of child abuse and a violation of the human rights of girls and women. It involves the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs, for non-medical reasons. It has no health benefits whatsoever and causes serious, often lifelong, physical and psychological harm. FGM is illegal in the United Kingdom, and protecting girls from it is a shared safeguarding responsibility for everyone who works with children, young people and families.

You will learn about the four WHO types of FGM, the immediate and long-term health consequences, who may be at risk, warning signs before and after FGM, the mandatory reporting duty under the Serious Crime Act 2015, FGM Protection Orders, the limits of confidentiality, and how to respond if a child or young person discloses or you identify a concern — including the difference between your mandatory duty and your wider safeguarding responsibility.
