DSEAR Awareness: Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres

Petrol, paint thinners, welding gases, flour and wood dust all have one thing in common. Handled carelessly, they can catch fire or explode. The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 — known as DSEAR — exist to stop that happening. This course explains what the law requires and what you can do to keep yourself and others safe.

DSEAR puts duties on employers and the self-employed to protect people from fires, explosions and similar events caused by dangerous substances at work. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) says dangerous substances can be found in nearly all workplaces. Many people handle them every day without realising it. Fires and explosions cause harm in three main ways: intense heat, pressure blast and a lack of oxygen.
