OVERVIEW
Being able to explain something you know well is not the same as being able to teach it. Delivering effective training is a craft in its own right: it calls for careful planning, an understanding of how adults learn, a repertoire of teaching methods, the confidence to lead a room, and the honesty to reflect on what worked and what did not. Whether you are a college tutor, an assessor, a workplace instructor running toolbox talks, or a subject expert asked to upskill your colleagues, the difference between a session people endure and one they genuinely learn from lies in these skills. This course takes you through the whole journey of a learning session, from the first stage of planning to the final act of evaluation and improvement. It is organised around the training and teaching cycle — identify needs, plan, deliver, assess, evaluate — and it draws on widely recognised teaching and training practice used across UK further education, adult learning and workplace development. You will learn how to understand your learners and use initial and diagnostic assessment, how to write clear aims and SMART objectives, and how Bloom’s taxonomy can help you pitch learning at the right level. You will explore a range of teaching methods, how to match method to objective and learner, how to make learning active and inclusive, and how to embed English, maths and digital skills. The later parts of the course focus on the live session itself: creating a positive learning environment, managing group dynamics and adult learners, motivating people, explaining and questioning well, and checking learning as you go. You will look at assessment for learning and constructive feedback, and finish with evaluation, reflection and your own continuing professional development, alongside the safe, inclusive and professional practice that underpins good teaching. The course ends with a 20-question multiple-choice assessment, which you must pass at 80% to earn your CPD certificate.
