Child neglect is the most common form of child abuse in the United Kingdom, and it features in a high proportion of serious case reviews and safeguarding practice reviews. Unlike a single dramatic event, neglect is usually quiet, gradual and ongoing — a steady failure to meet a child’s basic needs that can do enormous, lasting harm to a child’s health, development and life chances.
