About this course.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), also known as Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD), is one of the most misunderstood and heavily stigmatised mental health conditions. People living with BPD experience intense and rapidly changing emotions, difficulties in relationships, a fragile sense of who they are, and very real distress that can, at times, include thoughts of self-harm or suicide. Yet the language so often attached to them — ‘attention-seeking’, ‘manipulative’, ‘difficult’ — is unfair, inaccurate and damaging. This course sets out to replace those labels with understanding, compassion and practical, trauma-informed support. Designed for care, health, social care and frontline staff, it explains what BPD/EUPD is, what it can feel like to live with it, and why a person’s behaviour often makes complete sense once you understand the distress and, frequently, the trauma behind it.

It explores the common features of the condition, the strong link with adverse experiences and trauma, and the importance of challenging stigma wherever you meet it, making clear that BPD is treatable: with the right psychological therapies and consistent, compassionate support, people can and do recover or improve significantly. References to self-harm and suicidal thoughts are handled carefully and without detail of methods, with a clear focus on taking risk seriously and signposting to professional help and crisis support including the Samaritans on 116 123. This is an awareness course, not a clinical qualification — it will help you respond more compassionately and confidently, but it does not replace professional assessment, therapy or supervision. The course ends with a 20-question multiple-choice assessment, which you must pass at 80% to earn your CPD certificate.
