OVERVIEW

About this course.

This course raises awareness of bribery and corruption and the key measures that reduce the chance of it occurring, so that you understand your responsibilities and those of your organisation. Bribery damages businesses, distorts markets, harms the wider economy and carries severe criminal penalties for both individuals and the organisations they work for. It is not a victimless or purely overseas problem: it inflates costs, undermines fair competition, and erodes public trust in business and government. The course explains what bribery is, the four offences created by the Bribery Act 2010 (which came fully into force on 1 July 2011), the corporate ‘failure to prevent’ offence and its ‘adequate procedures’ defence, the difference between legitimate hospitality and a bribe, the position on facilitation payments, and the Ministry of Justice ‘six principles’ that organisations use to prevent bribery. Real UK enforcement examples are used throughout.

It is suitable for all staff and for anyone who acts on behalf of an organisation. On completion you will take a 15-question multiple-choice assessment and must score at least 80% to earn your CPD certificate. The assessment may be retaken. The course should take approximately 60 minutes to complete.

COURSE DETAILS

Who it’s for, and the law behind it.

Employees, managers and anyone dealing with suppliers, agents, contracts, gifts or hospitality — and the compliance leads responsible for the organisation's anti-bribery procedures.

The Bribery Act 2010 creates four offences: offering a bribe, receiving one, bribing a foreign public official, and — uniquely — a corporate offence of failing to prevent bribery. That last one matters most to employers: an organisation is liable for bribery committed on its behalf unless it can show it had adequate procedures in place. This course covers what counts as a bribe, where gifts and hospitality cross the line, facilitation payments, and how to raise a concern.
