Anaphylaxis is a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that can develop within minutes of exposure to a trigger such as certain foods, insect stings, medicines or latex. Quick recognition and the right emergency response save lives, so a clear understanding of anaphylaxis matters in schools, workplaces, hospitality, care and the community. This course explains what allergies and anaphylaxis are, what triggers a reaction, and why it happens.
It then focuses on the things that save lives: recognising the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis quickly, the emergency response including the correct use of an adrenaline auto-injector (such as an EpiPen) and calling for help, and the aftercare that follows. It also covers prevention, planning and the responsibilities of those supporting people with known allergies. It is an awareness-level course that builds the confidence to act in an allergic emergency; it does not replace hands-on medical or first-aid training required for a role.
