OVERVIEW

About this course.

Supporting people with their medication is one of the most common — and highest-risk — tasks in care. A mistake with medicines can cause serious harm, so anyone involved needs a clear understanding of their responsibilities and the systems that keep people safe. This course explains the role of medication in care and the law and guidance that governs it (including the Medicines Act, the Misuse of Drugs Act, CQC expectations and NICE guidance), and the different routes and forms that medicines take.

It then focuses on safe administration in practice: the ‘six rights’ (right person, medicine, dose, route, time and the right to refuse), accurate recording on the MAR chart, and how consent, mental capacity and a person-centred approach shape the support you give. It covers safe storage and disposal and, crucially, how to recognise, prevent, report and learn from medication errors and near misses. It is an awareness-level course: it builds safe understanding but does not replace the employer-led competency assessment required before a worker administers medication.
